editor's letter |
dear friends:
mabuhay! 2019 marks the 20th volume of kb mag, which began in 1999 to underscore filah's commitment to its motto: "expression is everything." kb abbreviates kinabukasan, or "tomorrow", and the mag's official tagline is "for a brighter tomorrow."
"light & shadow" thematically unifies what's displayed in this issue. this theme celebrates 20 years of community resilience, celebration, and expression through the diverse subject matter and mediums contained in the magazine. though life is steeped in both light and shadow, both remind us what matters most. through examining our dappled histories, we are made better.
we fall. we hurt. we learn. we grow. both light & shadow represent the strength & vulnerability i hope continue to permeate not only the fil-am community, but the davis and broader community at large.
through the past 19 years, the magazine has held the dreams, fears, & hopes of those who have the courage to share their form of expression. this year is no different.
to those who contributed to this issue, thank you for your submissions & for being vulnerable enough to welcome others into your art.
to those who are reading this issue, thank you for your interest & your time. your support of expression & art matters.
to filah board 2018-19, thank you for your unequivocal support: your encouraging memes, your riotous board meetings, your unexpected transparency. it has been a privilege to work alongside you; i hope the warmth you gave to me has spread through this issue.
know history, know self. to create our future is to remember what we've lived through. may the works in this issue remind you to look equally at the intersection of light & shadow, good & bad. may the voices in this issue encourage and embolden you to maintain the spirit of kinabukasan.
let us step together into a future lined with the stories -- struggles and success alike -- of where we've been.
all my hope,
