author's note: AIOTS 2019. I chose to sing a compilation of songs that told a chronological story of how I’ve dealt with loving myself and others over the past few years of my life. Though they have helped me overcome my hardships, they continue to inspire me as I live and write my herstory.
First, “Love” by Keyshia Cole: the lyrics of this song remind me of my younger self, who struggled with giving too many pieces of myself to others. I believed that love was only found in others, but this song gained an entirely new meaning for me and my pledge sisters. It reminds us of how we met and will always be in each other’s lives.
Second, “If I Could Fly” by One Direction: sometimes when you love someone, you would really do anything for them because they make you feel like they would do the same. Its beauty helps me find light in the relationships that have ended in my life. This song means a lot to me because it was written by Harry Styles (who I love lmfao) and I saw him sing it live for the first time this past summer. I also chose to sing this for the sweet group of people in my life that came to AIOTS and love to love the 1D era of our lives.
Third, “Someone New” by Banks: when a relationship ends, it’s often bittersweet because both people decide that they need to grow on their own but know that they are still going to have love for one another. This song really describes that feeling. A feeling I felt when I found this song almost 3 years ago. Listening to it now reminds me how much I’ve grown into myself, by myself, and with the help of others.
Fourth, “thank u, next” by Ariana Grande: this song is not only one of the most iconic songs of 2019, but of my 2019. This song reminds me of the strength that I’ve gained from overcoming hardships. I’ve learned that there’s beauty in the struggle, beauty in my struggles. I am grateful for the people that have come in and out of my life.
Performing at AIOTS was one of the most memorable and transformative moments of my 3rd year at Davis. Choosing to perform and having the support of the people I love in my community there to cheer me on boosted my confidence in performing, and fed into a lot of my personal growth. Thank you for listening!
